What the E16 Error Actually Means

The E16 error appears when your decoder can receive a signal from the satellite but can't properly decode or authorise it — it's DStv's way of saying “I can see something, but it's not coming through cleanly.” It's one of the most common error codes we get called out for, and the good news is that a genuine handful of causes account for almost every case.

What to Check Before You Call Anyone

A few checks take two minutes and occasionally solve the problem outright:

• Check that all cable connections at the back of the decoder are firmly pushed in — a loose connector is a surprisingly common culprit after cleaning or moving furniture.
• Look outside at the dish itself. Has anything moved, sagged, or is a branch now hanging in front of it? Wind and tree growth shift dish alignment more often than people expect.
• Try a decoder reset: unplug it from the wall for a full 60 seconds, then plug it back in and let it restart completely before testing again.
• Check whether the error appears on all channels or just some — if it's isolated to specific channels, that points to a different issue than a full signal loss.

What Usually Causes a Persistent E16

When the quick checks don't clear it, the most common underlying causes we find on-site are a corroded or water-damaged LNB (the small component at the end of the dish arm), a dish that's shifted out of precise alignment — even a few millimetres matters at satellite distances — or a damaged cable run, often from UV exposure on an outdoor section or rodent damage in a roof space.

Storm damage is a frequent seasonal cause too: heavy wind can shift a dish just enough to drop signal quality below the threshold DStv needs, without any other visible damage.

When to Call a Technician

If a decoder reset doesn't resolve it, or the error keeps returning, it's a dish, LNB or cabling issue that needs a proper signal test with a meter — not something to keep resetting and hoping. We carry spare LNBs and cabling on every vehicle specifically because this is such a common repair, so most E16 call-outs are resolved in a single visit.
